Back to School, Back to Work: Why Fall Is a Great Time to Start a Career in Aging Services

A caregiver in blue scrubs embraces a smiling older woman seated in a wheelchair outdoors in a green, wooded setting.

There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. Kids go back to school, routines reset, and the year’s final stretch has a kind of momentum that the summer months don’t. For people who’ve been quietly thinking about a career change — but haven’t quite taken the step — fall is often when the thinking becomes doing.

If aging services has been on your list, this is a good time to move.

Why fall hiring in aging services is active

Senior living communities hire year-round, but fall often brings a surge of activity. Budget cycles reset. New residents move in after summer family decisions. Some staff transitions happen at the end of summer. The result is that fall is frequently one of the more active hiring periods in the field — with real openings, motivated employers, and genuine responsiveness to outreach.

New training cohorts start in fall

Many CNA certification programs, LPN programs, and other aging services training pathways launch new cohorts in September and October. If you’ve been waiting for a good time to get certified, fall enrollment windows are often among the best.

The Caring Careers Start Here resource library includes links to training programs across Minnesota — including community college programs with fall start dates and flexible scheduling for working adults.

The back-to-school energy works in your favor

Something about the September rhythm — the sense of new beginnings that school-year culture creates — makes it easier to start something. To send the message you’ve been meaning to send, apply for the certification you’ve been considering, or reach out to an employer you’ve been curious about.

Use that energy. It doesn’t cost anything to send a message through the Employer Match tool or to spend twenty minutes on the Find Your Career page exploring roles that match your background. The risk of exploring is low. The cost of not exploring is another year in the wrong place.

A simple way to start this week

Visit the Find Your Career page and identify one or two roles that interest you. Then use the Employer Match tool to find communities near you and send a direct message to one of them. You’re not committing to anything — you’re starting a conversation during a season when those conversations are particularly welcome.

Fall is a good time to begin. The field is ready for you.
