Overview
Job Description
Groundskeepers maintain the outdoor spaces of a senior living community, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming throughout the year. Responsibilities include lawn care, hedge trimming, garden maintenance, snow removal, seasonal preparation, and ordering supplies as needed.
For residents who may spend much of their time indoors, well-kept outdoor spaces matter more than people might expect. A clean pathway, a maintained garden, or a cleared walkway after a snowstorm directly affects residents’ safety and quality of life.
Groundskeepers take pride in creating outdoor environments that residents and families actually want to spend time in.
Education Requirements
No formal education is required for this role. Some employers may prefer a high school diploma or equivalent. Training is provided on the job.
A Day In This Role
In warmer months, a typical day might involve mowing the lawn, trimming hedges, watering garden beds, and clearing walkways. In winter, mornings often start early with snow removal to ensure residents and staff can move safely. Throughout the year you’ll monitor outdoor spaces for hazards, restock supplies, and coordinate with facilities staff on seasonal projects. It’s active, outdoor work with visible results.
Advancement Opportunities: Where this role can take you
Cross-Pathway Note: Groundskeepers who want to expand their skills often move into maintenance technician roles, where building systems and repairs become part of the work. Others build toward supervisory and leadership roles within facilities operations.
