Roles and Responsibilities of a Registered Nurse
Nursing is a dynamic profession and RNs fulfill a wide range of responsibilities and roles each day, including:
- Comprehensive Care and Coordination: RNs in assisted living communities evaluate and monitor residents’ health, oversee treatments, develop and update care plans, and coordinate with other healthcare professionals.
- Staff Supervision and Support: RNs supervise, train, and support other nursing staff like CNAs, TMAs, and LPNs.
- Emergency Response and Problem Solving: RNs respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and make critical decisions to stabilize residents.

Reaching Advanced Nursing Roles
There are many opportunities for RNs interested in progressing to a more advanced role. More experienced positions include:
- Minimum Data Set (MDS) Coordinators: Perform assessments of residents using the Minimum Data Set (MDS) to ensure that assessments are compliant with regulations, and coordinate care plans with other caregivers.
- Director of Nursing: Manage all aspects of nursing, including staffing and scheduling, supervise and support nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, Nursing Assistants), coordinate with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals, and handle administrative duties.
- Clinical Nurse Supervisors: Direct the daily duties of the nursing staff, evaluate and adjust care plans, regularly train and educate nursing staff, and ensure a high quality of care for residents.
While many advanced nursing roles share overlapping duties, all have specific areas of focus and require an RN degree and substantial experience. MDS Coordinators focus on resident assessments; Directors of Nursing manage the entire nursing operation, including staffing and administrative duties; Clinical Nurse Supervisors manage the day-to-day.
