Job Description
Health information management (HIM) professionals keep the records that hold a care community together. In aging services, accurate, well-organized health information is essential — it supports care decisions, regulatory compliance, and the safety of every resident.

Education Requirements
Requirements vary by employer. Many positions prefer or require certifications in medical coding or health information management — such as the Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in health information management is a strong foundation. Some roles are accessible to candidates with relevant on-the-job experience.
A Day In This Role
A typical day might include reviewing and updating resident records, coding recent medical encounters, responding to documentation requests from nursing or medical staff, and running a report for the Director of Nursing ahead of a state survey. The work is steady, detail-driven, and essential.
