Job Description
The Licensed Assisted Living Director is responsible for every aspect of a licensed assisted living community — from care quality and staffing to regulatory compliance, family relationships, and the culture that shapes how residents experience daily life.
This role requires someone who can lead across disciplines: supporting nursing and care staff, working with hospitality and housekeeping teams, managing budgets and operations, maintaining compliance with Minnesota’s assisted living regulations, and serving as the primary point of contact for residents, families, and state surveyors.
It’s a demanding role — and one of the most meaningful in the field. Assisted Living Directors directly shape the quality of life for every resident in their community.
Education Requirements
Minnesota has specific requirements for licensed assisted living directors. Candidates should review current qualifications through the Minnesota Department of Health. Most employers require or prefer prior management experience in aging services, a background in nursing, social work, or healthcare administration, and demonstrated leadership skills.

A Day In This Role
A day might begin with a walk through the community to check in with residents and staff, followed by a care conference with nursing and social services on a complex resident situation. Midday might include reviewing financials with the business office, responding to a family concern, and meeting with a prospective resident and their family. Afternoons often involve staff check-ins, compliance documentation, and planning for an upcoming survey.

Cross-Pathway Note: Licensed Assisted Living Directors with clinical backgrounds sometimes move into Director of Nursing roles in settings that value both clinical and operational leadership. Many also advance into LNHA or C-suite roles as they build experience.
